  • Cephalosporins, 1st Generation

Oral first-generation cephalosporin. Spectrum includes gram-positive organisms with limited gram-negative coverage. Indicated for UTI, skin and skin structure infections, pharyngitis, and tonsillitis.

Indicated for the treatment of urinary tract infection (UTI), including cystitis.

For the treatment of skin and skin structure infections including impetigo.
For the treatment of group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal (GAS) pharyngitis (primary rheumatic fever prophylaxis) and tonsillitis.

Documented hypersensitivity

  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dyspepsia
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Rash
  • Urticaria
  • Pseudomembranous colitis
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Transaminases increased
  • Neutropenia

Adjust dose in severe renal insufficiency (high doses may cause CNS toxicity); prolonged use may result in superinfection

Pregnancy Category: B

Lactation: enters breast milk; use with caution

Adults

2 g/day PO.

Elderly

2 g/day PO.

Adolescents

30 mg/kg/day PO, not to exceed 2 g/day PO.

Children

30 mg/kg/day PO, not to exceed 2 g/day PO; 50 mg/kg PO x1, not to exceed 2 g PO, has been recommended for endocarditis prophylaxis.

Infants

30 mg/kg/day PO.
